CRA Reassessment Process

Bob AllenTypically the reassessment process for a "tax shelter" (RPGA) proceeds along the following lines.  Of course, there may be variations for a particular program or a particular donor.

Step 1:  Usually CRA starts the process by contacting the tax shelter (RPGA) promoter and collects information about the tax shelter (RPGA). Donors are not usually aware of this step - but the promoter usually alerts the donors of the likelihood of Step 2.

Step 2:  CRA sends a letter to each donor requesting information within a certain time - usually 30 days.  Often, most of this information has already been obtained from the promoter.  CRA implies that failure to send the information will somehow affect their actions.  (It won't)  You should note that there is no need to produce documents that you no longer have.
